Concerned, Inc. is a private, non-profit agency that assists people with disabilities in learning skills necessary to achieve independence in the community. Concerned, Inc. has been providing quality outcomes to people for 37 years and presently serves over 130 people with mental retardation, mental illness, brain injury, and physical and learning disabilities throughout its programs. This agency provides services to people from birth throughout their entire lifespan within its programs.

The Harlan Community School District (HCSD) consists of a PK-12 program with approximately 1,430 students district wide. The strength of the district lies in the eight communities that make up the district overall. Lions Clubs International is a volunteer organization dedicated to leadership development through community service. Lions are primarily known for working to end preventable blindness. Every Lions Club is autonomous and participates in a vast variety of projects important to their communities. These projects range from cleaning up local parks to providing vision screening for pre-school children.

Iowa Community Kitchen provides free-will donation meals in the county, serving an average of 160 meals per week. They service both residents able to attend weekly meal service located at the First Baptist Church, 1325 Chatburn Ave., Harlan, as well as shut-in residents.

Shelby County 4-H provides various programs for the 200 4-H members in the county. It empowers youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnership with caring adults. The organization also provides summer day camps for youth of all ages and funds will be used for the registration of low income or at risk youth for those camps.

Shelby County Historical Museum
